Mike Vernotico '64

Mike Vernotico is a Summit native son. Born in Newark, his family moved to Summit in 1958 into a house on Lafayette Avenue that his father built. He attended Summit Junior High and Summit High School, graduating in 1964. Mike was a National Honors Society student, and is most fond of his after-school activities. Mike played the Crown Prince in the Summit High Production of “The King and I.” He played football on the Hilltoppers ’62 and ’63 teams that were back to back Conference and State Champions. The ’63 squad was legendary Coach Howie Anderson’s first undefeated team.

Mike then went on to Princeton where he continued playing football and was elected VP of the Basic Engineering Society. Mike earned three scholarships and held as many as three jobs at one time to finance his education. Mike was graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

Mike and Joanne have been married 36 years. They initially settled in Short Hills where Mike became very active in Community Service. He served as President of his local civic association, President of The Business and Professional Woman of M-SH, President of the local chapter of the March of Dimes and a Board Member of The First Occupational Center for the Handicapped. Mike was elected to council and then Mayor of Millburn-Short Hills.

Mike very much wanted to raise his son Ryan in Summit, his real home, so they returned. Mike became very involved in youth sports and to this day still coaches football and baseball. Ryan, now 19, was recently graduated from Summit High.

Mike was elected to Council in 2005 and is Chairman of the Public Safety Committee, a position he takes very seriously. He has served as Council liaison to four boards: The Board of Education, The Board of Recreation, The Environmental Commission and the Summit Housing Authority. Mike also serves on Assemblyman Eric Munoz’s Advisory Board and coaches youth football and baseball.

Mike’s profession has taken him around the world developing, designing and building large scale projects. He currently is a Managing Principal of Landmark Consulting Partners, providing planning, design and construction services to real estate developers.

Mike, Joanne and their son Ryan, who is attending Union County College this fall, reside at 151 Oak Ridge Avenue, with their Chihuahua puppy, K.B., and their ferret Fum Fum.
